The American Heart Association (AHA) has a great opportunity for Communications Manager in our National Center office located in Dallas, TX.

As the Communications Manager, you would be responsible for assisting with the development, implementation and execution of media relations strategies and tactics for the American Heart Association’s Public and Media Relations Department; with a primary focus on Heathy Living strategies and sponsors’ year-round activations. The development of media and PR communications strategies include: identification of media messages, development of AHA Statements, LTE, Op Eds, talking points and fact sheets, news releases, media advisories, assists with development of stories, media pitches; securing media placement, development of influencer tactics; ensures integration with AHA markets, issues and field leads including media advocacy. Responsible for collaborating with marketing and communications leads and PR agency of record to develop tools and information for promotion of AHA programs and news to consumers via national media.

Here are some of the essential job duties:

  • Works collaboratively with marketing and business leads on the Healthy Living program teams to develop strategy to align with organizational and market impact goals. Also responsible for hands-on tactical execution, with input and collaboration from Health Living business team

  • Serves as communications, media and public relations lead for AHA’s Healthy Living portfolio, with a focus on proactively developing measurable success strategies that align with the AHA goals for the entire Healthy Living market and drafting reactive material such as the CEO’s statements, Op-Eds, etc

  • Helps to develop the necessary tools, content, events and information to successfully promote Preventive Health programs and news to consumers via national and local media outlets. Comprehensive understanding of the national media landscape in order to strategize effectively for effective, relevant media placements and implementation

  • Liaises with Public & Media Relations Science News team to ensure successful integration of AHA Science News in consumer messages/proposals related to Healthy Living topics

  • Assists AHA’s Affiliate Communications Directors by providing necessary information to drive year-round coverage

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university

  • Experienced team leader and comfortable presenting strategic planning and ideas for executives

  • Minimum of three (3) years with extensive knowledge of consumer-focused public relations/media relations, marketing and advertising

  • At least two (2) years’ experience in public relations and media relations track record of successful placements

  • At least two (2) years of effective media contacts and relationship building

  • Ability to travel up to 20% - 25% of the time, including overnight stays
