American Heart Association Instructional Designer, Voices for Healthy Kids in Atlanta, Georgia

Responsibilities

The American Heart Association’s Initiative, Voices for Healthy Kids, has an excellent opportunity

for an Instructional Designer in our Advocacy group. This position can be located at our National Center office in Dallas, Texas or be remote/home based .

In this role, you will direct, develop and execute a leadership development plan for building the equitable advocacy practices of partnerships, interested agencies, and on-the-ground organizers. This person will work with advocates across the country as part of a national advocacy initiative.

This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 11/30/2022 with strong confidence in continued funding beyond 2022.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Conduct and create/modify plans to provide technical assistance/coaching in collaboration with Policy Engagement Managers and grantees (as appropriate) to address support and training needs for active and future campaigns using our existing curriculum for campaign planning, power sharing, health equity, media advocacy, grassroots, coalition building and community engagement.

  • Updates and revises curriculum as needed and facilitates leadership development programs for the Voices for Healthy Kids grantees and network that advance policy change and aims to understand root causes of inequity and aid in balancing power to communities historically marginalized.

  • Plan, organize, and conduct cross-training, leader to leader coaching or related methods as appropriate based on the identified target audience. Modify engagement programs for teams at the local, state or tribal level including volunteers and partner organizations. Facilitate, create and coordinate agenda development, content creation, speaker engagement, evaluation and post-training follow-up plans while working closely with key staff and consultants for online and in person events.

  • Conduct needs assessment, review and update existing training modules as needed, and research best practices for advocacy or policy movement organization and education.

  • Build and adapt the work be as inclusive as possible, constantly striving to address the to the needs of a vibrant movement including diversity in all ways including language, learning style, and ability.

  • Increase learning opportunities and opportunities of the Voices for Healthy Kids network including potential podcast, short video and other short training opportunities, sharing and coaching.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in training, advocacy, coaching or leadership development.

  • Experience in and understanding of social determinants of health, health equity, and a demonstrated commitment to building equitable communities.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred or related field/work experience.

  • Successful experience in leading a diverse team and/or authentic community engagement.

  • Demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 20% of the time.

  • Experience with local, tribal state and/or federal advocacy, policy or community organizations.

  • Lived experiences related to our work and priority communities. Voices for Healthy Kids believes that lived experiences are important qualifications in community led policy change work.

  • Additional language skills preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively individually and with collaborators, staff, and the public as part of a team.

  • Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations.

  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
