The American Heart Association’s Initiative, Voices for Healthy Kids , has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Manager of Communications in our Advocacy group. This position can be located at our National Center office in Dallas, Texas or be remote/home based . The selected candidate will lead the crafting and delivering of strategic communications with equity at the center, developing multimedia resources for policy change campaigns, integration of Voices within the American Heart Association, campaign message development, and marketing support for Voices for Healthy Kids initiative. The Senior Manager will also manage direct report(s) who provide coaching and technical assistance to advocacy policy change campaigns at the tribal, state and local levels.
The Senior Communications Manager will manage communications strategic planning, execution and implementation for the overall initiative, including managing the brand, overseeing the development of collateral, developing internal and external communications and marketing strategies, manage social media accounts, website strategy and management, planning and updates, message research and will collaborate with peers at partner organizations on shared, supportive, and cohesive communications planning to reduce redundancies while maximizing resources and impact.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in developing communications materials and strategies that prioritize health and racial equity to ensure that the Initiative’s communication vehicles and practices reflect the most current best practices for equity in communications. This position requires up to 20% travel.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 11/30/2022 with strong confidence in continued funding beyond 2022.
Manage the development, execution and monitoring of comprehensive and integrated communications and marketing plans for Voices for Healthy Kids.
Manage the execution of Voices for Healthy Kids visibility through our website, digital marketing, content creation, editorial calendar, and social media platforms, including expanding audience and engagement around our key policy issues. Includes overall brand management and growth.
Responsible for content creation and design needs of the initiative, including developing written and web-based resources and tools and approving all materials to ensure alignment and adherence to Voices for Healthy Kids and AHA Branding Guidelines, including white papers, website copy, newsletters, grant applications, donor requests, sustainability/fundraising supports, campaign toolkits, advertisements, and more. Includes helping translate science and research into user friendly resources.
Work to ensure the language and visuals used by Voices for Healthy Kids continue to become more anti-racist and inclusive, including conducting regular audits of website and materials.
In conjunction with Health Equity Manager, collaborate to generate outreach, communications efforts and build strong relationships with specific multicultural media outlets with an emphasis on the Black/African America, Hispanic/Latino/a, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American and Pacific Islander.
Direct supervision of remote Media Advocacy Manager who coaches and provides technical assistance in support of communications effortsto advocacy policy change campaign including local, state and tribal campaigns within Voices for Healthy Kids agenda.
Manage and increase social media engagement through Facebook and Twitter and increase connection with American Heart Association accounts and channels. Reach out to influencers, media and beyond in order to arrange story placement on a regional and national level.
Responsible for developing, managing and editing the tone and language used on Voices for Healthy Kids materials based on updated message research, research/science, cultural shifts and to become more anti-racist.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field preferred or related work experience.
5 years of experience in public relations communications, public relations, brand management, corporate communications, marketing or journalism.
3 years of managerial experience. Nonprofit experience preferred.
Experience and interest in understanding social determinants of health, health equity, and a commitment to advancing equity in communities.
Ability to motivate staff, mediate conflict and drive results.
Proven ability in communications planning and implementation, media relations, marketing, web strategy and social media engagement.
Experience procuring and managing message research firms and then implementing and training others on new messaging guidance.
Voices for Healthy Kids believes that lived experience is essential to community led policy change work. We define lived experience as first-hand involvement and knowledge of the social issues that impact a given community. Direct personal experience with building equity is prioritized criteria for determining ideal candidates .
Proficiency with writing and editing for a variety of audiences via numerous marketing platforms, including writing for the web and mobile, experience with AP Style preferred.
Experience in engaging communities via paid and organic social media with metrics to support strategies (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and proven strategies for staying current with best practices and tactics.
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously, in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
Must be able to travel overnight approx. 20% of the time.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
Experience with platforms such as Statamic, Sprinklr and Good Analytics
Bilingual (Spanish or other language)
Experience with tribal, state or local advocacy, media advocacy and/or community organizing
