The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Program Manager.
The Program Manager , Focused Research will serve as the managerial lead for new and/or unique strategic research initiatives, including but not limited to rapid response funding initiatives, Board of Directors-initiated research funding opportunities, health equity research networks and other future strategic research mechanisms funded by AHA. The program manager will have a sufficient level of scientific background and science-related work experience to oversee the entire process of research administration and communication activities, with a wide range of duties to ensure that the strategic and unique research funding mechanisms operate efficiently and effectively. This position has responsibilty for stewarding volunteer Oversight Committees and other volunteer groups as the assigned primary staff resource, to develop and implement the direction, collaboration, and ongoing communications for working with funded directors, training directors, principal investigators and other key personnel within each focused research program. Additionally, this position works closely with AHA science leaders to develop documents such as executive summaries, reports, presentations, requests for applications (RFA) and other records as needed. Additional duties include: working with mission advancement staff to develop and produce proposals and reports for new strategic initiatives, research grant program descriptions, development of website content and other essential communications.
Essential Job Duties:
Manages communications among funded key personnel, and serves as primary resource for program administration. Works closely with directors, principal investigators, grants officers and fiscal officers at the funded institutions to ensure successful reporting, communications, and outcomes.
Responsible for planning science meetings, conferences, and webinars for assigned strategic award programs. In conjunction with meetings staff, coordinates logistics and works with meetings staff to secure contracts, and meetings plans. Directs the plans for research/business updates, including web site information and other written communicaton channels.
Manages activities for various volunteer program committees, including primary staffing of volunteer leadership committees as assigned. This includes Oversight Advisory Committees, and other subcommittees, task forces, and working groups as assigned and required to execute programs.
Directs the AHA budgeting process for large, strategic awards and other focused research award programs. Administers financial information for awards in funded networks and centers, and other focused research programs, including analyzing and monitoring budgets, and auditing financial reports.
Develops content for applicant webinars and online training sessions for applicants and grants officers. Delivers presentations to groups on webinars and in-person meetings.
Serves as a liaison with other AHA departments, including finance, legal, technology, and communications to ensure that strategic and focused research programs are managed in compliance with AHA policy and mission.
Manages research co-funding relationships as assigned —negotiates new ones and oversees existing ones (e.g., Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and others). Provides ongoing management of relationships for identified awards. Matches available awards to sponsors’ interests.
Directs the completion/wrap up of awarded networks and/or large funding initiatives, including (but not limited to) developing end-of-network publications. This includes working collaboratively with other staff (e.g., Outcomes manager) and other departments (e.g., design and content/news/editorial) to produce outcomes documents and reports for the AHA Board of Directors and other key AHA audiences. Manages the process and communications of Network Directors and other Prinicpal Investigators to plan and submit their end-of-award publication to AHA journals.

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant scientific discipline
Five (5) years of the following experience:
Excellent written and oral communications skills required
Ability to think logically to solve problems
Thorough knowledge and use of common office software required
Ability to write, edit and produce reports and other formal documents of communication
Three (3) years of the following experience:
Project management experience, with ability to juggle/complete multiple projects
Ability to use databases to execute queries for information
Ability to interpret and communicate data and information
Successful demonstration of volunteer coordination & management
Knowledge of various research programs (NIH, NHLBI, AHA)
Superb organizational skills
Ability to produce, manage and understand financial documents
Two (2) years of the following experience:
Basic knowledge of science and scientific terminology
Polished presentation skills
Masters Degree in any science related area
