American Heart Association Community Relations Director in Chattanooga, Tennessee

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an opportunity for a Community Relations Director in Chattanooga, TN . The director will focus on developing and implementing outreach efforts to drive equitable and sustainable health strategies, and promote the organization through community awareness activities, including media relations and social media. The director will build strong volunteer relationships and establish partnerships with other community organizations.

Some of your responsibilities will include (but not limited to):

  • Collaborate with a broad range of community partners to lead the process of building sustainable and equitable strategies to improve health outcomes for residents of the market. This will include assessing the community health needs, and developing, coordinating and/or implementing community wide strategies that focus on eliminating health disparities through proven-effective Policies, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) change approaches. The current community health priorities are nutrition security, blood pressure, women’s health, and tobacco.

  • Pitch and place stories in traditional media, drive engagement with our audiences through social media strategies, and build in-kind media sponsorship opportunities to highlight priorities and sponsors.

  • Identifies, secures and media trains local AHA spokespersons.

  • Build a network of volunteers and identify appropriate external partners to drive meaningful engagement to advance American Heart Association priorities and drive toward equitable health and wellbeing in the community. Recruit and train health ambassadors from sororities, service organizations and faith-based organizations.

  • Implements awareness campaigns on topics such as heart disease, acute events, women’s heart health. Works collaboratively with other key market staff to develop an integrated approach to such campaigns.

  • Collaborate with development staff and volunteers to identify, cultivate, and secure program funding, including sponsorships and in-kind for relevant programs, campaigns, and health impact opportunities.

In this role, you will report to the Executive Director. Daily travel within the market is required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or some college plus experience.

  • At least 2 years of demonstrated ability working in community relations, public health, or media relations.

  • Experience working as a team member with multiple internal and external constituencies: staff, media, external corporations, and volunteers.

  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills including specialized experience in speech writing, general business writing, writing, and editing for both print and broadcast media.

  • Required experience working with multicultural communities. Demonstrated community relationships and experience with community engagement, mobilization or organizing with a diverse group of community members across race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, immigration and/or socio-economic status.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills in community assessment assessing the local market environment and available resources to successfully implement new and existing programs.

  • Proven ability to recruit, mobilize and manage volunteers, including C-suite level executives.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple large projects ensuring deadlines are met, quickly pull together information and stakeholders to move a project forward, use health data and public health best practices to select interventions.

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment working towards common goals with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work with stakeholders across multiple sectors (education, faith, business, healthcare, government). Ability to influence team members without supervisory authority.

  • Excellent listening skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, negotiating, problem-solving and decision-making

  • Self-motivated, collaborative, flexible, effective organizational skills multi-tasking, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
