Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Development Director in our Midwest Region located in Columbia, MO. The Development Director is responsible for our Go Red For Women Luncheon (GRFW) and Gala Heart Ball (HB) events in Columbia, Missouri.

Your responsibilities will include securing local sponsorship income, individual donations and auction items, in partnership with the immediate supervisor to support the events and to maximize overall income potential. Accountability will include volunteer recruitment, training, campaign goal and management activities to ensure efficient growth and development of the assigned local events. Recruit the volunteer leadership and support volunteer teams to grow our annual event(s) participation. Development Director will work as part of a team while adhering to specific “Best Practices” and staying with the American Heart Association’s fundraising cost guidelines.

Essential Job Duties:

Selling our lifesaving mission to local and corporate business partners through prospecting and securing event participation; while providing tools and training to volunteers to meet your fundraising goals of the Go Red For Women Luncheon and Gala Heart Ball events.

  • Develop relationship-building strategies to include making personal visits on a monthly and quarterly basis. Develop effective working relationship with high level-executives and individual donors.

  • This position has a fundraising net goal of approximately $300k. You must exceed challenging fundraising goals by developing effective customer relationships through persuasion, organization, competitiveness, persistence and time management.

  • This position requires you to be in the territory on a daily basis securing sponsorships, individual donations and auction items. This is a workout of your home position that requires daily travel in the designated territory.

  • Volunteer recruitment and training, event logistics, year-round planning, cultivation, sponsorship and auction item solicitation for the events is ongoing.

  • Supports in developing and monitoring an annual working plan, with dollar and volunteer recruitment goals, budget and timelines for the events. Develop contingency plans, as needed to successfully complete fundraising activities.

  • Develop profiles on the top businesses within the assigned geographic area with a documented plan to secure their involvement. Completes company goal setting worksheets and prioritizes companies by their potential.

  • Assure that the vision and strategic direction for the events are in alignment with the organization’s goals and objectives.

  • Work closely with the Communications Director on the promotion and communications plan for upcoming events. #LI-CS1

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or some college plus experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree. Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1½ years experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.

  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in fundraising, outside sales or in a non-profit organization in a similar capacity. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.

  • Knowledge of community organization, sales, fundraising, and marketing principles, practices, techniques, and trends.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation, and training. Skill in written communications to include clear and concise narrative reports, evaluations and similar narrative pieces.

  • Ability to read, comprehend and analyze number goals, as well as fundraising reports. Skill in use of spreadsheet/database analysis.

  • Ability to do daily travel up to 75% and overnight travel up to.

  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down into smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting and/or moving.
