The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for an Active Living Policy Engagement Manager based out of our National Center office! This position can be remote/home based but must live near a major airport.
This individual will be responsible for effectively building the capacity of local and state advocates through hands-on field consultation to Active Living policy campaigns. Responsible for communicating and educating a network of supporters such as local elected officials, organizational champions, individuals, and influencers in their communities on Active Living issues. Responsible for extending coaching, and technical support using the templates and leveraging American Heart Association’s experience leading successful public health and social change campaigns.
This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current funding is through 9/30/2022.
Build and execute effective relationship management with Active Living campaigns to ensure access to and uptake of available supports and technical assistance
Provide effective, strategic consultation to policy change campaigns in support of the Active Living agenda with a strong emphasis on building health equity
Direct campaign technical assistance, as well as connecting campaigns with other staff and technical assistance providers, related to strategic campaign planning, coalition development, communications and media advocacy, community organizing and engagement, decision maker advocacy, issue expertise, heath equity, power building, fundraising & sustainability, policy analysis & development and science & research
Ensure campaigns have access to the breadth and depth of resources available from AHA by leveraging resources, tools and assets (e.g. communication, advocacy, field resources)
Serves as Active Living Issues Specialist for the American Heart Association advocacy enterprise. Must understand the overall policy direction for the issue, campaign activities inside and outside AHA around the country, emerging trends and tactics, and managing relationships with related national and regional stakeholders

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Five (5) to Eight (8) years of relevant experience
Experience in community organization, grant funded program development or related responsibilities
Experience or demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation
Experience working in sports, physical education, public recreation
Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal government activities and structures. Ability to assess the local and state governments related to advocacy issues
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team
Ability to travel up to 60% local and overnight stay
Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations
Experience working in public health policy
Experience in volunteer management
Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems
