The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Director, Revenue Accounting based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, Texas.

This position will work in a hybrid setting (in office 3 -5 days a week.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance and direction of the Senior Vice President and Controller, the Director of Revenue Accounting is responsible for developing and directing policies and procedures related to review of donor agreements, accounts receivable, revenue recognition and other related revenue accounting activities. This position is responsible for ensuring that revenue is accurately recognized in accordance with US GAAP including organization and process design to ensure contract review and accounting functions keep pace with a dynamically transforming organization. In addition, this position manages and leads a team to execute monthly/annual close procedures and periodic revenue reporting deliverables.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Oversee the timely and accurate recording of sponsorship agreements, including reviewing, approving, collecting & maintaining documentation. Interact with Mission Advancement, Corporate Relations and Region leadership and field staff to ensure adherence to policies and resolution of issues relating to donor agreements.

  • Lead, develop and direct research and resolution of technical revenue recognition matters. Contribute thought leadership and guidance and provide counsel to accounting staff as well as National and Region leadership on how to apply revenue recognition guidelines. Oversee documentation and support of revenue recognition positions taken by management. Provide support and guidance to the legal and development teams during contract negotiations, pilot programs, and reviews in the areas of revenue recognition.

  • Direct accounts receivable activities such as invoicing, monthly statements, and related restricted revenue documentation. Examine and establish accounting and business processes for restricted activity to ensure timely collection and review of restricted documentation. Additionally, work with Corporate Accounting team to assist with restricted releases, as needed.

  • Oversee all aspects of accounts receivable collection process including monitoring aging reports, collaboration with Region and National leadership and to ensure adherence to current Accounts Receivable policies, including timely write-off of overdue accounts. Monitor and provide leadership on quarterly bad debt reserve analysis.

  • Direct and manage daily cash receipts process including upload of daily CDS file, other cash receipts, accurately applying pledge payments and reconciliation. Ensure timely recording of non-CDS revenues such as ACH’s, credit card payments, website donations, and online revenue systems. Provide primary finance leadership for CDS vendor relationship.

  • Manage, train, and develop revenue accounting and accounts receivable staff. Train and develop team to provide National and Region staff with timely responses to customer questions and issues. Oversee all revenue activities related to monthly and annual closing process.

  • Ensure evolution of business processes and cross-functional partnerships in line with transforming business needs. Design contract review and accounting processes to support new revenue strategies.

  • Document and implement cash controls for events and other incoming cash for deposits. Develop and maintain best practices for day of event cash management. Provide cash management oversight for Scientific Sessions and International Stroke Conference.

  • Lead integration with technology and other organizational staff to support on-line fundraising and revenue generation efforts. Oversee merchant processing, PCI Compliance, integration and reconciliation between subsidiary and general ledger systems.

  • Establish policies and procedures for ensuring timely support of internal/external audit requirements.

  • Assist the Controller & Vice President and Management with special projects, as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related area. CPA designation required.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in accounting for a large complex organization.

  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in non-profit revenue accounting.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP, specifically as it relates to revenue recognition; internal controls and financial reporting required.

  • Demonstrated self-drive and agility, including ability to effectively manage multiple projects, dynamically shift prioritization, operate with both attention-to-detail and big picture focus, and work effectively against multiple/competing deadlines and priorities.

  • Comprehensive skills in automated financial systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to form, lead and develop a high-performing team.

  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and documentation skills.

  • Excellent listening, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of National Center and Region staff and volunteers.

  • Excellent customer service skills with strong attention to detail.
