Clinical Science Manager in Los Angeles, California

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Clinical Science Manager, Food Is Medicine Initiative (FIMI) in our National Center office. Location of the selected candidate is flexible, provided location allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.

In this role, you will provide direction and guidance to the AHA National Food Is Medicine Initiative clinical study team. This project will include organization of a large-scale national clinical trial of “Food Is Medicine” approaches to the management of cardiovascular disease, including assessing implementation strategies and cost-effectiveness.

The Clinical Science Manager reports to the Chief Clinical Science Officer for progress on the clinical study program, with additional “dotted line” reporting to the National Executive Lead on Emerging Strategies regarding broader FIMI issues, as needed. Interacts with AHA Science leadership and Science and Medicine Advisors and serves as the in-house expert and resource to other AHA staff with respect to the Food Is Medicine Initiative clinical study.

*This is a full time, grant-funded, benefits eligible opportunity. Current guaranteed funding is through 12/2023, with the possibility for continued funding for up to ten years depending on meeting milestones of the project.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide consultation, guidance, and review on science/clinical aspects to FIMI staff and volunteers who participate in the clinical trial.

  • Potential for participation in related public and professional programs, patient and lay publications, press releases, corporate and funder relations, and marketing materials with health and science implications and other public or professional facing activities.

  • Work with AHA colleagues to produce on-line and face-to-face educational programs, practice resources, and patient educational tools related to the FIMI clinical study.

  • Provide staff support to science and policy advisory bodies and serve as a clinical liaison to the Rockefeller Foundation partnership.

  • Work with FIMI team to help develop and review content for professional, public, and community-facing website and products and ensure content is current and accurate.

  • Serve as FIMI science/clinical representative/spokesperson, as appropriate and as needed.

  • Keep abreast of Food Is Medicine science and implementation science literature.

Qualifications

  • RN (BSN, APN, NP), PA, MS, RD, CDN or other advanced degree with clinical experience in nutrition, dietetics, or social policy programs in ambulatory settings, academic medical centers, hospital settings, or private research settings.

  • Minimum of three (3) years professional clinical or research experience in nutrition, dietetics, or other food programs, primary care, cardiovascular care or related fields.

  • Staff position experience in a not-for-profit and/or government sector or an active committee/board/officer member in a professional member society.

  • Outstanding writing & communication skills. A publication history in peer reviewed journals or history of presentations in conference settings is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with AHA staff, non-profit partners, federal government, health systems, and the public as part of a team.

  • Proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple, sophisticated projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.

  • Ability to understand, integrate and summarize scientific literature.

  • Ability to work with volunteers with clinical, research, business, or community backgrounds.

  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 25% of the time.

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Experience in implementation of food, nutrition, or diet related programs

  • Clinical experience (RN [BSN, APN, NP], PA, MS, RD, CDN preferred)

  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
