We're hiring a Senior Vice President, Human Resources for our Eastern States Region which includes Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia,

Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia. The ideal location for this position will be in Richmond or Arlington VA, Boston MA, District of Columbia (DC), or Pittsburgh PA.

The SVP will be a strategic and hands-on business partner to leaders and employees throughout the region and serve as a liaison between the region and our national HR and legal teams. This trusted individual will manage employee relations and partner with managers to develop and retain talent through targeted learning opportunities, while using total rewards, performance management, coaching, and talent development to achieve the goals and objectives of the association.

This position will collaborate with national HR Leaders and other region HR Partners to ensure resources and processes are in alignment.

This position will ideally be based in an AHA office within the territory, though the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week exists at this time.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with region leaders and guiding region employees on matters related to Human Resources.

  • Ensuring appropriate application of employment and leave laws and regulations along with managing compliance requirements established by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the American Heart Association, and other applicable parties (including grantor organizations).

  • Ensuring the advancement of the region’s workplace diversity, inclusion, and equity efforts in alignment with the association-wide vision and commitments.

  • Supervising the region’s human resource team and partnering with the assigned talent acquisition professionals to achieve the team’s objectives.

  • Leading the Affirmative Action Program for the region.

  • Managing and promoting employee engagement, including, but not limited to leading the region’s annual staff awards process and program, handling the employee engagement survey process, communications, and follow-up. Coordinates the preparation and submission for national staff awards.

  • Applying knowledge of the association and markets within the region to identify the optimal structure, talent and competency needs for both short and long-term.

  • Using total rewards with objective of attracting and retaining staff, including merit, incentives, and bonus programs.

  • Finding opportunities for employee development, mentoring, performance management, onboarding, and organizational planning.

  • Coordinating performance management processes and working with leaders to achieve goals and objectives of the organization.

  • Managing employee relation issues which include, and are not limited to, handling of employee complaints, ethics/fraud hotline reports, crucial conversations, coaching managers through corrective action, and conducting and documenting investigations.

  • Coordinating the region’s compensation program to effectively balance internal and external equity with available budget dollars and to differentiate rewards for top performers and to improve the impact of merit increases, incentives, and awards.

  • Collaborating with HR leaders throughout the organization on benefits, policies and procedures, learning & development, HR technology, and recruitment.

  • Providing timely and accurate content for the region newsletter and town halls to engage staff in transparent 2-way communication.

  • Assisting with other duties and projects as needed.

Qualifications

Requirements for Success:

  • Practical knowledge in leading and handling the execution of processes, projects and tactics within Human Resources while understanding the impact on other areas of the organization.

  • University/College Degree in Human Resources or related field or equivalent experience and knowledge. HR certification preferred (such as Senior Professional in Human Resources SPHR).

  • A minimum of 8 years prior relevant experience, and at least 5 years of supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrable experience collaborating with HR centers of excellence and translating for alignment within the region.

  • Strong organizational development experience, including manager coaching, organizational planning, and talent development.

  • Experience in administration, implementation, and monitoring of regional HR programs inclusive of multiple areas such as employee relations, compensation, and employee communications.

  • Knowledge of employment practices including recruiting strategies, selection techniques and compliance with state, and federal legislation.

  • Experience leading an affirmative action program preferred.

  • Validated experience in leading employee relations in a diverse and changing workforce.

  • Knowledge of training and development practices including identification of training needs.

  • Strong organization and project management skills with the ability to build and lead project teams.

  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people across the organization, including senior executives.

  • Ability to communicate ideas and concepts live, via multimedia, in writing, and in scripting others, in a clear and compelling manner.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% throughout the region and the organization, including overnight stays periodically.
